SURGICAL PROCEDURES
Facelift Surgery:
The facelift is a surgical procedure, which reduces sags and bags of the face. Using incisions that are hidden in creases around and behind the ear, the deep tissues of the face are resusended to allow a gentle redraping of the skin. The procedure also treats the mid-face, jowls, and neck and can take 10 years off of the patient's age.
Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty):
Blepharoplasty can be performed for either the upper or lower eyelids. Sagging or puffy eyelids give a person a tired appearance. When conversing with others it is customary to keep eye contact. Having excessive eyelid skin may lead others to ask if the person is tired or has lost sleep. Eyelid surgery is used to return one's vibrant appearance. Many patients feel better as the heaviness is lifted from their eyes.
Nasal Surgery (Rhinoplasty):
Rhinoplasty is the art of reshaping the nose. Of all the procedures we perform, we feel this one can change a person's self image most dramatically. Removing a dorsal hump or narrowing a wide nasal tip may allow a person to feel more comfortable in front of the camera, when meeting new people or simply in participating in normal daily activities.
Forehead and Brow Lifting:
Using an endoscopic technique allows the surgeon to make small incisions behind the hairline and lift the eyebrows into their natural position. Eyebrows in men should be just at the bony rim of the upper eye socket. In women the brows should be just above the rim and arch gently above the latter part of the iris of the eye.
Scar Revision
Many times people may have an accident, infection or surgery that causes an unsightly scar. This scar may be wide, large or in the wrong direction. Although scars cannot be erased they can be markedly improved by resurfacing or re-excision with re-direction. After revision we use a series creams and lotions to help the scar heal the best way possible. If you have an unsightly scar on your face or neck, you should come in for a consultation.
Otoplasty (pulling back the ears)
Prominauris otherwise known as prominent ears is most commonly caused by the the failure of the ear to fold properly during development. Although this is deemed as cute when a child is very young, school aged children are often made fun of for this condition. This can lead to psychological distress. This is more troublesome for boys who cannot grow their hair long to hide and prevents girls from pulling their hair back. At Bloomfield Facial Plastic Surgery, we perform otoplasty, which is pulling back of the ears, using fine permanent sutures. This is best done just between kindergarten and first grade but can be done any time after age 4 years, even in adults.
NON-SURGICAL PROCEDURES
BOTOX:
BOTOX injections treat the dynamic wrinkles of the forehead and around the eyes by weakening the muscles in these areas, giving them a more taut and younger appearance. The effects of BOTOX last approximately three months, but when patients avoid frowning, the effects can last four to six months. Studies have shown that BOTOX can be used in conjunction with other procedures, such as laser resurfacing or facelift, to enhance a person’s overall results.
Dermal Fillers:
Dermal fillers such as collagen and Restylane are used in our office to fill in deep facial lines. We most commonly use them for softening lines in the buccolabial groove (between the cheek and mouth near the nose), as well as in and around the lips.
Chemical Peels:
Chemical peels are performed in the office using TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid). This very safe chemical is applied on facial skin then de-activated quickly. It helps the superficial skin layers to sluff, allowing newer, healthier skin to come to the surface. This is part of a skin rejuvenation regimen that works in conjunction with one's daily skin care. Six chemical peels, performed two weeks apart, are usually recommended.
Facial Laser Resurfacing:
Although this is not a surgical procedure, it must be done in a surgical center. This is the equivalent of a medium to deep chemical peel usually performed for deeper wrinkles and superficial acne scarring. It evens out the skin tones and builds a nice collagen layer beneath the skin. Collagen will continue to build for 6 months to one year after the procedure.
Laser Hair Removal:
Laser hair removal by definition is really laser hair reduction. This is an easy non-invasive way to eliminate or reduce unwanted hair by 75 to 100 percent. This can take anywhere from one to six treatments depending on your skin and hair color, and ability to tolerate the treatment settings. Expect two to three treatments for moderated hair reduction. This procedure is very well tolerated.
Vascular Lesion Removal:
The V-beam laser is the next generation of Pulse Dye Laser, which is a safe way to remove fine superficial blood vessels of the face. It can also be used to treat certain red birth marks such as port-wine stains. This is well tolerated in adults but children usually need sedation or general anesthesia depending on the age of the child and duration of the case. Expect one to three treatments for removal, although four to six treatments can be necessary.
Pigmented Lesion Removal:
Brown spots can be removed safely with a laser once the lesion is determined not to be of malignant nature. Most commonly this can be used to remove café au lait spots (brown birth marks) and age spots not amenable to topical bleaching agents or superficial chemical peels. Expect one to three treatments for removal, but it can require four to six treatments.
Treatment of Leg Veins:
Leg veins that are amenable to laser therapy include those which are superficial spider veins usually 1-2 millimeters in width. This procedure is well tolerated with a little topical anesthetic (numbing) cream. Expect a minimum of one to three treatments, or four to six at the most.
